Environmental Degradation, Reparations, and the Moral Significance of History

In one of his most well known works Caney focuses on the environmental degradation as well as the issue of reparations of slavery. The biggest question that arises in his argument is should the people who are at fault pay the reparations ? Whether that is an environmental issue or slavery. He strongly voices that it is simply not fair for  the ones that did not cause these issues to pay reparations. Although in his paper he does mentioned that the people who did start slavery can not be punished. Yet the people who still ensure that type of behavior and thought should be. Many environmental problems that our generation has to fix were not caused by us but that does not mean we should sit back and do nothing. Like the environmental problems that we now faze and the issue of slavery were seen by the government and no action was taken.
The United States refused to believe in the environmental problems that our world is presenting and like the environmental problems slavery was overseen. Many argue that it is ignorance but why would a whole country ignore such important human rights that it is own people suffer ? Unless it is beneficially  economically and politically which would explain why slavery was even acceptable enough to have start it. The points that were raised were the wrongdoings should be paid by the ones who have caused, yet that can not happen with every problem.

  1. Hello Theo,

I hope this message finds you well.

I enjoy how you mention in your blog how many in the United States refused to believe in the environmental problems that others in the world have had to face. Do you believe, therefore, that the nation as a whole is reponsible for providing reparations, or that only some should be held to this standard?
